General Climbing Stewardship
When climbing in Squamish (and any crag) it is important to treat the area and the other climbers with respect. This is extremely important to us at Squamish Rampage and is one of the reasons for this event. We want to help people new to outdoor climbing learn from the ones with experience how to care for the outdoor climbing environment so that we can still be using it for many decades to come. As such, here are some general rules:
Please do not try to climb problems that do not have adequate spotters or crash pads.
Please spot each other and share your pads!
Please pick up ALL trash (even when it isn’t yours).
Please stick to designated trails whilst moving around the forest.
Please use designated washrooms.
Please share the climbing area with everyone and remove chalk aka tick marks when you are finished with them.
Carpool when possible
Two Ways to Win:
Two Ways to Win:
1. Grand Prize Raffle Winner
Participant(s) will earn one raffle entry for each successfully uploaded beta video (“Beta Video”) attached to applicable challenge boulders, as defined by the Acceptable Boulder conditions below. There is no limit to the number of raffle entries a Participant may earn.
Each Beta Video must meet the following criteria to be eligible for raffle entry:
Beta Video must clearly show the boulder in full frame;
Beta Video must clearly show the climber in full frame and all movement must be easily identifiable;
Beta Video audio must not contain any explicit content, including but not limited to, verbal language, explicit clothing, explicit gestures
Beta Video must be of the send attempt. No partial, clipped, or otherwise manipulated videos will be accepted. A graphic overlay will be accepted so long as it doesn’t interfere with visibility of the climb.
Beta Video submissions are limited to one (1) video per Acceptable Boulder per Participant.
2. Category Prize Winner(s)
Participant(s) that place first, second, or third in their Competition Category are eligible to win. Points are accrued by completing Acceptable Boulder(s)/Route(s) within the Challenge Period. Only Boulders/Routes that meet the following criteria will be eligible and count towards a Participant’s score (“Acceptable Boulder/Route”).
Acceptable Boulder(s)/Route(s) are defined as;
Boulders/Routes that are included in the predefined challenge list.
Boulders/Routes that exist on public land, accessible by all Participants. Boulders/Routes on private land are not permitted regardless of whether or not a Participant has received explicit permission to access said private land.
Boulders that do not reside in areas or on land that currently involve ongoing access issues or disputes of access. Contact the Squamish Access Society (https://squamishaccess.ca) for more information regarding ongoing access issues in your region.
Known and existing boulders that have publicly identifiable access information such as through the KAYA app or online or print guidebooks.
KAYA and/or Squamish Rampage, in its sole discretion, reserves the right to remove, restrict, or void any Acceptable Boulder at any time during the Challenge for any reason deemed appropriate.
During Registration, Participants will be given the option to pick a Competition Category.
The Competition Categories for Squamish Rampage - Bouldering Challenge are defined by the difficulty level of Acceptable Boulders:
Cruiser (V0-V2)
Crusher (V3-V5)
Sender (V6-V8)
Rampage (≥V9)
The Competition Categories for Squamish Rampage - Route Climbing Challenge are defined by the difficulty level of Acceptable Routes:
Cruiser (≤5.10d)
Crusher (5.11a-5.11d)
Sender (5.12a-5.12c)
Rampage (≥5.12d)
KAYA and/or Squamish Rampage reserves the right to adjust a Participant’s self-assigned Competition Category based on Participant’s performance in the Challenge, specifically in cases, but not limited to, when a Participant climbs a boulder/route that has an assigned grade higher than their respective Category.
A Participant’s Score is automatically calculated by the KAYA app, using the scoring table below, upon successful submission of each Acceptable Boulder/Route. Top 5 ascents of Acceptable Boulder(s)/Route(s) within each category will accrue points towards the Participant’s final score.
Ties will be broken by using the number of attempts for all boulders/routes (in favour of less attempts). If the tie cannot be determined using this method, an additional 6th boulder/route will be used towards the Participants scores.
An ascent will be accepted as valid within the competition as defined by, but not limited to, the following conditions:
Bouldering Challenge:
The Participant completes an Acceptable Boulder from start to finish as defined by the generally accepted climbing term, “Redpoint”, meaning to complete the climb in one attempt without rest or physical aid or assistance. Bouldering ascents must be either witnessed by another person (name of witness should be mentioned when logging the ascent in the KAYA challenge), or video footage must be uploaded if no witness was present to confirm the ascent.
Acceptable Boulders which have an established “top out”, generally meaning to climb the boulder to the top instead of down climbing or jumping off, must be climbed as such.
The Participant establishing control on the “start”, generally meaning the publicly identified start hold(s) as defined by existing information contained within, but not limited to, the KAYA app and digital or print guidebooks.
The Participant establishing a controlled position at the “finish” of the boulder, generally meaning the last hold of the boulder or in a stable, standing or crouched position at the top of the boulder.
Route Climbing Challenge:
The Participant completes an Acceptable Route from start to finish as defined by the generally accepted climbing term, “Redpoint”, meaning to complete the climb in one attempt without physical aid or assistance (includes sitting on the rope).
Sport Route Climbs must be completed “On Lead,” and top-rope ascents will not be accepted.
Trad Route Climbs must be completed “On Lead,” with protection placed during the ascent. Top-rope and pre-placed gear ascents will not be accepted.
Name of a witness or belayer should be mentioned when logging the ascent in the KAYA challenge.
KAYA and/or Squamish Rampage, in its sole discretion, reserves the right to remove, restrict, or void any video at any time during the Challenge for any reason deemed appropriate or that fails to comply with the above conditions.
