CONTRIBUTOR Agreement FAQ

  • Contributor: Guidebook author. Contributes the initial dataset for the guide.

Moderator: Keeps the guidebook up to date into the future after the initial dataset has been created.

  • As a Contributor (Author), you’ll provide two kinds of climbing info:

    • Reference Data — public facts like climb names, locations (GPS + trails), grades, bolt counts, etc.

    • Contributor Data — your original unique content, like climb descriptions, area descriptions, any and all unique written content, photos, and videos.

All climb names, grades, descriptions, photos, topo lines, GPS and trails will be uploaded to KAYA by the agreed upon launch date.

  • As a Moderator, you agree that you will keep the data up to date by actively moderating UGC and user reports at least once per month. If we determine that the guide is not being actively moderated, we can reduce your revenue share or terminate the agreement.

  • You earn royalties based on how many people view your data after it's officially verified and published on the platform.

    Here’s how it works:

    • Verified Destinations Only: Payments begin when your Destination is “Verified.” This means all data for that Destination meets our quality standards as outlined in Exhibit B.

    • View-Based Payment: When users with a KAYA Pro subscription view your content, you earn a share of that month’s subscription revenue.

    • Revenue Sharing Agreement:

      • 47.5% of the revenue from your guide goes to KAYA

      • 47.5% goes to contributors (33.25% Contributor / 14.25% Moderator)

      • 5% is donated to climbing orgs (like Access Fund or local LCOs)

You’ll get a report every quarter showing breaking down the attributable revenue for your guide.

  • You retain ownership of your Contributor Data. You grant KAYA a license to use the data, but the data remains yours.

    • You can always use your data - both Reference and Contributor data - to publish a paper book in addition to your digital guide with KAYA.

    • You can switch your license from exclusive to non-exclusive at any time with 90 days’ notice. After that, you can publish your content on other digital app-based platforms, but at a reduced revenue share from KAYA.

    • We will always pay you for your data as long as it’s hosted on KAYA, no matter what else you choose to do with it.

  • Yes. You can end the agreement entirely with 90 days’ written notice. If you do:

    • Project 9a must remove your Contributor Data from the platform.

    • Reference Data (public facts) will remain on the platform.
