GUIDE FAQs

  • You should only apply as a guidebook author if you have published or are in the process of publishing a print guidebook with a publishing company (this includes self-publishing).

Why is the application process different for established authors? Guidebook authors typically have contracts in place that require Team KAYA to get involved.

  • Yes! We are now accepting applications for sport climbing areas, which will begin to launch in the app in early 2024.

We strongly encourage you to apply if you’d like to contribute information for a sport climbing crag!

  • To contribute a destination to KAYA, we require a a few key data points:

    • The name, grade, and a written description for each climb

    • GPS data for each boulder, cliff, wall where climbs are located

    • HD photographs of each climb, with topo lines drawn using our guide management program

    • Written descriptions for information pertaining to access, approaches, and history of the area, if known

  • There are a few factors that determine how long it can take:

    • First, and most impactful, is how much work you’ve already done and/or how much information you’ve already collected.

    • The second factor relates to your overall knowledge of the destination. If it’s your backyard and you know each climb like the back of your hand, collecting information for a comprehensive guide will go quickly.

Generally, depending on the size of the destination and how much data you need to collect, it can take anywhere from a few weeks to a month or more to get your destination published on KAYA.

  • KAYA Guides are unique in that they can constantly be updated in real-time as changes happen.

After you submit a destination to KAYA’s catalog, you will have the option to apply to become a moderator. Moderators are given special access to manage a destination and make changes on the fly.

  • When you submit data to KAYA, you are granting KAYA a license to use that data, however you retain copyright and other proprietary rights that you may hold in the content you publish to KAYA.

To learn more about how KAYA handles user content, please review Section 10. User Content in the Terms of Service.

  • Please do! KAYA seeks to establish partnerships with all LCO’s in good-standing with their community. We believe it is important to support local climbing orgs and help spread education about outdoor access and ethics.

In many cases, KAYA will donate a small portion of revenue directly back to an LCO to continue to support and fund ongoing stewardship.
